Lladró Marshland Mates – Porcelain heron pair
Lladró Marshland Mates porcelain figurine
Marshland Mates is a Lladró porcelain piece featuring two elegant herons surrounded by vegetation typical of a wetland environment. The composition stands out for the contrast between the brilliant white of the birds and the various greens and natural tones used for the reeds, leaves, and flowers.
The piece was designed by sculptor Salvador Debón and introduced in 1990. It can also be found in Spanish under the name “Pareja de Garzas Recogidas”.
Its dimensions are 31 × 21 × H 34 cm, a considerable height that allows for a clear appreciation of the elaborate work done on the birds and all the surrounding vegetation.
Two herons depicted in different positions
The scene is built around two herons placed at different heights. This arrangement creates a vertical composition and allows for the contemplation of numerous details without the two birds obscuring each other.
The heron at the top appears elevated among the reeds. Its long legs are integrated into the vegetation, and one of its wings is shown partially spread. The feathers are worked individually using different levels of relief.
In the lower area, we find the second heron. Its body remains closer to the base while its long neck rises in a marked curve.
The difference between both positions brings movement to a scene that, despite being made entirely of porcelain, conveys a certain sense of naturalness.
The work on the feathers and necks
One of the elements that most catches the eye is the wings. The photographs allow one to observe numerous layers of carefully differentiated feathers.
The long white necks create curved lines that contrast with the verticality of the central reeds. The beaks, meanwhile, incorporate soft natural tones, as do the small details surrounding the eyes.
This treatment makes it possible to clearly distinguish the birds from the surrounding vegetation without breaking the chromatic harmony of the composition.
Porcelain vegetation around the birds
The scene is not limited to the two herons. A large part of its visual richness comes from the plant ensemble that occupies the central area and the base.
Tall reeds, elongated leaves, small plants, and flowers are distributed around the birds. The different green tones provide depth and help to visually recreate a small wetland environment.
The tallest reeds also fulfill an important compositional function: they visually connect the lower area with the heron located at the top.
A piece to be contemplated from different angles
Marshland Mates presents details almost around its entire perimeter. Depending on the side from which it is viewed, one can appreciate the legs of the herons, the different layers of plumage, the background vegetation, or the central structure of the composition.
This allows it to be placed on a console table, sideboard, display cabinet, side table, or furniture piece where it can be contemplated from different perspectives.
Due to its dimensions, it can also function as a centerpiece within a porcelain collection.
Glazed and polychromed porcelain
The birds feature the characteristic glossy white finish that makes the reliefs of the wings and body especially visible.
The vegetation introduces a much wider color range, dominated by greens, bluish-greens, and earth tones. The beaks and legs incorporate softer shades that complement the whole.
The glazed finish enhances light reflections and allows one to better distinguish the small changes in volume present in the feathers, leaves, and flowers.
A Lladró piece for collectors
Animal figurines constitute a recognizable part of Lladró's artistic production, and birds especially allow for the development of detailed work on wings, plumage, and natural poses.
In Marshland Mates, the two herons do not appear isolated. The vegetation is an essential part of the scene, turning the piece into a complete composition dedicated to nature.
It may be especially interesting for collectors of Lladró porcelain, bird enthusiasts, or those looking for a decorative porcelain piece with a significant presence.
